FOOD DETECTIVES

I swear sometimes I think being a cook would be so cool but then slaving over a hot stove all day doesn't sound so nice. I can't imagine coming home and wanting to do it for your family too. Or maybe you could just make dinner at work. . .

Anyway, I have been taping this show called Food Detectives on the Food Network. The host is Ted Allen, one of the guys from 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'. They have done controlled tests on several "wives tales" involving food. I will be happy to share what I have learned with you.

• Milk WILL stop your mouth from burning after eating spicy hot foods.
• Ginger WILL help with motion sickness. (pills are fine)
• Cutting refrigerated onions greatly reduces tears.
• Double dipping at a party is a BAD thing. Don't eat the dip if someone has done it.
• the "5 second" rule on dropping food DOES inhibit germs and sticky foods inhibit more. (My opinion on this practice is unchanged: it probably won’t kill you, but it might kill your reputation if someone sees you doing it.)
• Eating plain celery is a negative calorie
• Charcol (like in foot pads or fish tank filters) is better for battling smells in the fridge than baking soda.

(the following one I learned on the radio)
• Eating watermelon at room temperature doubles it's antioxident power.
