I taped the Grammys (music awards) last night and havent watched the whole entire thing yet but I do have several observations so far to post.
The Differences between
Mimi (Mariah Carey) and Madonna
Mimi can SING!
Madonna can DANCE!
Mimi seem humble
Madonna seems self-righteous
Mimi has boobs
Madonna has a BUM!
Mimi delivers to colored folks
Madonna delivers to mainly caucasian
We don't know who Mimi slept with
We KNOW who Madonna slept with
Mimi made a come back
Madonna never really went away
Mimi wore alot
Madonna wore next to nothing
Mimi is kinda boring
Madonna is kinda exciting

Madonna is definitely a performer. No doubt about it. Her music is definitely toward mainstream top 40 and dance, which does tend to be primarily white based. Madonna also has a very large European following, as well as South American, not to mention subcultures like her HUGE gay following. Madonna is an expert at finding the "next thing" and putting it out there. Her retro-disco cd Confessions on A Dancefloor is the perfect example of that. She pushes to be ahead of the curve, and that is all good! Her goal with this latest cd was to give a "wink and a nod" to disco and make songs that didn't need to be remixed, because she herself often liked her remixes more than the original songs. She succeeded! As for the show on Wednesday, she knocked it out of the ball park! Great Show, Great Energy, Got the crowd HYPED and set the tone for the night. Couldn't think of a better way to start the night.
As for the best singing of the night, it was definitely NOT Mimi. It was Mary J Blige! She sold it to the back row as well as the front. She left no room for speculation that she was the first lady of R&B. She SAAAAAAAAAAAAANG her song with U2. SAAAAAAANG it!
As for Mimi. The same problems that she faces in her life, she faces in her music. She is racially mixed in real life. She is white and black. She has struggled with that her entire life. If you watch, her music struggles with what she wants it to be too. Does she want to sing R&B or does she want to do Top 40.
Now, some important facts! The Beatles have sold the most music in the world! Michael Jackson is next. The third person is Elvis. Coming up behind him quickly is Madonna. She is the most successful solo female artist of our time. She has had albums that have sold 5-6 million copies, and they call that a disappointment. Other artists hope to make 1 million to go platinum. Madonna doesn't have to worry so much about that. Her fan base will support her regardless.
Mimi had several CD's that didn't do well in a row, so not just one, but two record companies dropped her. She is now on a record label that does push its music toward R&B and Urban markets.
Madonna has only been on two labels in the entire 20 years of her career. First she was on Sire for Warner Bros. As part of her contract negotiations, she then got her own company Maverick which produces for Warner Bros. That is how my girl flows!
Madonna has also ventured into movies, TV, books, and Children's Books.
Mariah, well, Mariah has done one movie (GLITTER) and has several flops on CD's.
Even with all that, Mariah has sold enough CD's worldwide to put her like 7th on the list.
And finally, bodies. No question, Madonna is more than 10 years older and looks 100% better. Mariah struggles with Weight issues, where Madonna struggles on getting too toned. Mariah struggles with sanity, where Madonna struggles to let go of her controlling nature. Mariah is divorced and dating. Madonna is married and has two kids.
Back in the day it was Madonna vs. Cindy Lauper... then it was Madonna vs. Whitney... Then it was Madonna vs. Britney... now you compare Madonna to Mimi.
The fact that everyone keeps comparing them to Madonna says EVERYTHING! She is what we set as the bar! Others will come and go, but I will only be going to see Madonna who announced yesterday that she would be touring SUMMER '06!!!
